How do Noise Cancelling Headphones Work?
By: Sai Piyush Pathak - Researcher

Noise cancelling headphones use a clever trick called destructive interference to block out noise. They have small microphones that listen to the sounds around you, like the hum of a plane engine or air conditioning. The headphones then create sound waves that are the exact opposite of those noises. When the two waves (the noise and the headphone’s wave) meet, they cancel each other out. This makes things much quieter and lets you focus on your music or whatever you’re listening to.
This technique works best with steady, low frequency sounds, like the constant buzz of a fan or engine. It’s not as effective with sudden or unpredictable noises, like people talking or dogs barking, because those sounds don’t have a steady wave pattern to cancel.
Apart from the active noise cancellation, the headphones also rely on passive noise isolation. This just means the headphones physically block some outside noise by covering your ears snugly, helping you hear even better.
In simple terms, noise-cancelling headphones combine technology and design to make noisy places quieter, allowing you to enjoy your audio without distractions!
