The Sticky Science of Sticky Notes

Ever wonder how sticky notes can adhere to objects like books, walls, and desks but are still so simple to remove and rearrange? Adhesion and cohesion are two fascinating ideas in physics that hold the key.


The sticky portion of the note adhering to a surface is called adhesion. The unique molecules that make up sticky note glue can cling to the molecules on any surface that you place it on. This explains why pressing down on the note doesn't cause it to move.


The ability of glue molecules to adhere to one another is known as cohesiveness. This indicates that the glue separates cleanly from the note as you peel it off rather than remaining on the surface. The adhesive doesn't leave a mess behind because it sticks to itself.


Sticky notes are designed with just the right amount of stickiness, thanks to this balance between adhesion and cohesion. They’re strong enough to stay where you put them but gentle enough to be removed without tearing or leaving residue. This makes them super handy for marking pages, leaving notes, or organizing your space—all thanks to physics!
