Why don't you fall off an upside-down Rollercoaster?

By: Aadyaa Keyal - Researcher

When we go to an amusement park, we're either afraid or excited to ride on rollercoasters, The most popular ones are often the upside down rollercoasters that make your heart beat way faster. The thrill, the excitement is all worth it when you're high up! Have you ever wondered why you don't fall off this scary ride?

You don't fall off an upside-down roller coaster all thanks to a combination of physics and engineering. The 2 main reasons are:

  1. Centripetal Force

This force pushes the car towards the center of an imaginary circle, The track's design ensures that the centripetal force is strong enough to overcome gravity.

  2. Inertia

Inertia is the tendency of an object to remain in motion, and it keeps you pressed into the seat as the coaster spins around.

Other factors like track designs, safety restraints and safety standards all play an important role too in making sure your ride is safe and fun at the same time!
